ATV TIRE TIPS THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Too many drivers do care about more than their tires once they are mounted on their vehicle. They must be regularly checked. And usually, a mere glance is enough for the best ATV tires

PRESSURE

Check the pressure once a month. This test must be carried out with cold tires; that is to say having rolled within 5 minutes at 60 km / h. If the examination can not be made only hot, do not deflate your tires. However, if you reinflate when you have already traveled a few kilometers, add 0.3 bars to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer. Attention an under-inflated tire increases fuel consumption, but above all raises security concerns because it is more likely to break out, with all the dramatic consequences that can result. When checking the pressure, remember to check that the spare wheel.

WEAR

If on your tires, the wear indicators begin to flush the surface of the tread (more explanations in the video), it is time to change: the tread depth has reached its limit legal use, namely 1.6 mm. Note: It is advisable to change winter tires when the thickness was reduced to 4 mm instead of 1.6 mm, for reasons of efficiency.

The appearance of a “pigeon egg” (a hernia) following, for example, of an impact against a sidewalk, imposes the change of the tire.

Part of a little more worn tire that another should alert you. If the wear is greater on the outer edges of the tire, it means that you drive under inflated. We must, therefore, go into a gas station to refuel air. If it is marked in the center, it indicates over-inflation. Deflate the tire a little only when it is cold. The latter case, a greater wear of an edge of one tire of the front axle may reflect a lack of parallelism it will be corrected by a professional.

MOUNTING

Better raise new tires (or less worn) at the back for more safety. In the case of loss of grip, get the car when the back is hidden is always more challenging (risk of head-to-tail) only when the front that lack of grip. It is imperative to mount tires of the same type, brand, and size on the same axle. Similarly, the wear difference between two tires on the same axle shall not exceed 5 mm.

PARKING

Sometimes the parking of the vehicle may test the resistance of the tire, for example when crossing a curb. Here are some rules to follow to avoid the risk of damaging the structure of the tire:
– Overcome obstacles at low speed (for example when it comes to riding on a sidewalk);
– Tackle any obstacle perpendicular to it;
– Do not park with a deformed tire (e.g., crushed against a sidewalk, or support over half).

FLAT TIRE, SPARE WHEEL

If your vehicle has a spare tire, regularly check its pressure. Please note that the tread depth should be at least 1.6 mm, even if the use of this wheel is only occasional.

Some tires with reinforced sidewalls allow run-flat at a reduced speed (80 km / h), time to reach a garage. The distance you can travel is not negligible (a few hundred kilometers). Besides the comfort of this type of tire in case of a puncture (no wheel change, no tow truck waiting), it negates the risk of accidents that could occur when changing the wheel: change a flat tire on the side of the road is indeed a very dangerous operation.

A flat tire can be repaired by a specialist. But it is necessary that the incident is causing a puncture not cause any other damage to the tire (gum too worn, damaged carcass).

LONG JOURNEYS

For a long ride on the highway, with a loaded car, inflate your tires more respecting the recommended pressure by the car manufacturer for this scenario (pressure values identified “in charge”).

WINTER

Winter use conditions (snow, mud, ice, temperatures below 7 ° C) justify the use of winter tires in a period between the months of October and April. These tires are designed for this type of particular use where they are more efficient than summer tires. They are identified by the marking “M + S” (Mud and Snow for mud and snow) stamped on the tire sidewall. But this indication is marked on a simple declaration by the manufacturer and does not prove the effectiveness of tires in cold weather or on snow. To this, we must rely on the marking “3PMSF” (a drawing of a mountain with three peaks with a snowflake) which certifies that the tire has passed a series of tests and is capable of operating in severe conditions of winter.

It is best to use four winter tires to maintain healthy behavior of the car avoiding adhesion imbalances. As for the “summer” tires, it is advisable to mount four identical tires is mandatory, must be installed on each axle same tires (same size, brand, and type).

TECHNICAL CONTROL

At the technical inspection, the tires are checked, and their condition can cause visit-against in case of:
– Deformation or deep cut: the tire must not show any chemical or mechanical alteration;
– Affixing a patch on the exterior of the sidewall;
– Presence of a hernia and swelling of the sidewall;
– Deformation of the thread (netting);
– Separation of the tread;
– Nick or crack on the sidewall or tread revealing the fabric or carcass directly or indirectly through manual intervention;
– Multiple cracks on the tire sidewall (e.g., alteration of the rubber).

STORAGE

If stored, especially if you use seasonal tires (winter and summer), it is necessary to clean the tires before their period of rest. We must use plain soap, especially not contain solvents or oils. Then it is advised to identify their position (front, back, left and right) with chalk to resume their place as they will be reassembled on the vehicle.
A tire with rim must be stored flat, and the wheels can be stacked. We can also suspend them.
A rim without tire should be placed on the floor vertically, changing its position once a month so that it does not deform.
